Understanding the RMR Score

TL;DR

The ReviewMyResidency (RMR) Score is a community-driven rating system that helps compare residency programs on a scale of 300-850. Programs are rated based on objective data and user feedback through a one-time upvote or downvote system. Create a free account to participate in voting.

What is the RMR Score?

Think of the RMR Score (ReviewMyResidency Score) like a credit score that we all have. It is a benchmark that is calculated the same way for all people, or in this case, all residency programs. The purpose of the RMR Score is to level the playing field for medical students and residents and aid them in comparing residency programs using a singular unique score that is comparable across all programs and offers a level of transparency and access that is otherwise not available.

Why We Created It

Choosing the right residency program is one of the most important decisions in a medical professional's career. However, comparing programs can be challenging due to:

  • Varying program structures and opportunities

  • Different geographical locations and settings

  • Diverse training environments and resources

  • Complex factors that affect program quality

The RMR Score simplifies this process by providing a single, comprehensive rating that takes multiple factors into account.

RMR Scoring System

RMR scores are broken down into four different letter grades, much like we all use in the academic world. Each residency program is assigned a letter grade and label, after an algorithm calculates a numeric score.

How It Works

Data-Driven Foundation

The RMR Score begins with objective program data, analyzing key factors that matter to residents, including:

  • Post Graduate/Fellowship Opportunities

  • Applicant Diversity

  • Salary & Benefits

  • Number of training locations

Community Input

What makes the RMR Score unique is its incorporation of community feedback through our voting system. Each registered user can provide one vote per program:

Upvoting :

  • Indicates positive experiences or impressions

  • Reflects program strengths

  • Contributes to score improvements

Downvoting:

  • Indicates areas of concern

  • Highlights potential challenges

  • Helps maintain score accuracy

Note: Users must create a free account to participate in voting, and each user is allowed only one vote (either upvote or downvote) per program.

Dynamic Scoring

The RMR Score is not static - it evolves based on:

  • Regular program data updates

  • Ongoing community feedback

  • Current resident experiences

  • Program developments

When you vote on a program, you'll see the score update in real-time, reflecting your input in the overall rating.

How to Use the RMR Score

For Medical Students

  • Use the score as an initial screening tool

  • Compare programs objectively

  • Identify programs that match your preferences

  • Track programs of interest over time

For Residents

  • Share your experience through voting

  • Help future residents make informed decisions

  • Contribute to program transparency

  • Support continuous program improvement

For Program Directors

  • Gain insights from community feedback

  • Track your program's performance

  • Identify areas of excellence

  • Address potential areas for improvement

Best Practices for Voting

Do:

  • Vote based on personal experience or thorough research

  • Consider multiple aspects of the program

  • Update your vote if your perspective changes

Don't:

  • Base votes solely on hearsay

  • Vote without proper consideration

  • Attempt to manipulate scores

Understanding Score Ranges

The RMR Score uses a 300-850 scale with four main categories:

  • Excellent (A): 800-850

  • Good (B): 650-799

  • Fair (C): 500-649

  • Poor (F): 300-499

Remember that scores can change over time as programs evolve and new feedback is received.

Our Commitment to Fairness

The RMR Score is designed to be:

  • Objective

  • Transparent

  • Equal across all programs

  • Resistant to manipulation

  • Continuously updated

  • Community-driven

While the exact scoring algorithm remains proprietary to ensure fairness and prevent gaming of the system, we are committed to maintaining a reliable and trustworthy benchmark that serves the medical education community.
